CALDEY ISLAND INDEPENDENT SAFEGUARDING REVIEW

Some rather astonishing and – it seems – positive news below.  I’ll need to read it and absorb it fully and its implications but four points come immediately to mind

1)Congratulations to  Survivor Kevin O’Connell for fighting for this result.

2) I know the RLSS helped at an early stage. Whether they assisted in making this review happen, I don’t know. If they did, then they have shown their real value as a safeguarding organization. Certainly they are listed in the document below.

If they didn’t, it’s a useful role model for the RLSS to take note of for other religious reviews.

3) In particular, this is how reviews should act as a TEMPLATE  for long overdue reviews of CROOME COURT and for THE DE LA SALLES

And, I believe, the Ipswich KNIGHTS OF ST COLUMBA whose criminal behaviour towards children in the 60s and almost certainly beyond must be dealt with properly and vigorously by the RLSS.

4)Kevin O’Connell also implicated Catholic priests in organized pedophile rings connected with Caldey Island.

This tallies with at least  three other examples of UK organised Catholic pedophile rings, including my own experience as a boy.

Hitherto, everywhere on the planet has had numerous examples of organized, systemic Catholic sexual abuse of children – except for… Britain. Somehow it’s part of our British supposed ‘exceptionalism’.

I was impressed by this statement by the monks:  ‘Caldey Island is under new leadership and they are committed to transparency, openness and healing.’

If only that were true of the De La Salles, Croome Court and the Knights who all make similar claims, but purely as a PR exercise and they provably don’t mean a word of it.

Let’s hope these monks are different and for real.

One gripe already… They should not use the word HISTORICAL which it’s widely accepted now is inappropriate, outmoded and dismissive of the full impact of the numerous and terrible crimes against children committed by the Catholic Church.

I know ‘non-recent’ is a bit crap, too, so why bother with it at all. Or say ‘crimes committed in the 1960s/70s/80s’ as the case may be.

This was the email I received this morning.

Hi Pat,

Caldey Abbey has just announced it has commissioned an independent review into historical claims of child abuse. The review is being conducted by Jan Pickles OBE and all the details are in the attached press release, FAQs and terms of reference documents. Maria Battle, the former deputy Children’s Commissioner for Wales is the new safeguarding lead on Caldey and she is available for comment. She can be contacted at this email address (safguarding@caldey-island.co.uk) or on 07562 946894.

This review is focusing on the case of Kevin O’Connell and he as asked that you be contacted to let you know about the review.

Kind regards,

Caldey Abbey

I’ve opened the documents for fellow survivors of Catholic crimes to read. As follows:

PRESS RELEASE

9th April 2024

Caldey Abbey Announces New Leadership and Commitment to Safeguarding

Caldey Island, West Wales – Caldey Island Cistercian Abbey is pleased to announce the appointment of Father Jan Rossey as its new Superior. Father Rossey is committed to fostering openness and transparency within the monastery. As a central pillar of this approach, an independent review into historical claims of child abuse has been commissioned.

“In common with many other organisations, Caldey Abbey has, in the past, received disclosures and allegations involving members of the monastic community about their behaviour towards children”, stated Father Jan. “We take these allegations very seriously and, in order to uphold our commitment to safeguarding, we have commissioned a leading Independent Safeguarding Consultant, Jan Pickles OBE, to conduct a thorough review.”

“This review is about taking responsibility, learning from the past, and building a safe environment for everyone,” Father Rossey continued. “I have also appointed Maria Battle, formerly the Deputy Children’s Commissioner for Wales, as our new safeguarding lead. Maria is reviewing our safeguarding policies, practice and training to ensure all visitors to Caldey are safe.”

“As we prepare to welcome visitors back to Caldey Island, we remain dedicated to providing a secure environment with effective procedures for safeguarding all who visit, live on, or work on the island.”

The conclusions of the review will be made public after completion.

CALDEY SAFEGUARDING REVIEW – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS):

Why is this happening now?

Caldey Island is under new leadership and they are committed to transparency, openness and healing. The first step to healing is listening and Fr Jan Rossey, the new superior of the Abbey, is conscious that people affected by historic abuse may not have been properly heard. He wants those affected to have a voice and to ensure that the lessons from the past are learned and to ensure everyone living on and visiting the island is safe.

Who is Jan Pickles OBE, the independent reviewer?

Jan is the former Assistant Police & Crime Commissioner for South Wales. She is an experienced social worker and has also worked in the third sector, probation service, government and the NSPCC. She is the director of a safeguarding advisory service to government, local authorities, NGO’s, education, sport, faith groups and the private sector. She has undertaken a wide range of similar reviews including Chelsea Football Club, Winchester College and for the Archdiocese of Birmingham. In 2022she chaired the Child Practice Review into the death of Logan Mwangi. She has held Ministerial appointments as a member of the National Independent Safeguarding Board of Wales and as a non-executive Director for an NHS Trust. She has been the Chair and remains a member of the Advisory Board for the Centre for Expertise in Child Sexual Abuse a Home Office funded UK wide based organisation which provides evidence-based approaches to the prevention of child sexual abuse and protection of victims. Jan Pickles had no previous connection to Caldey Island or the Abbey.

Will the results of the review be published?

Yes. The key findings and recommendations will be published.

How long will it be before publication?

The review is underway. We will give whatever time is needed to complete it so we can’t say just yet as this is up to the reviewer.

Is this a public inquiry?

No, this is an independent review. Requests for a public inquiry were not granted by the Welsh Government or the Children’s Commissioner for Wales. Caldey Abbey does not have the legal powers to hold a public Inquiry but the new leadership at Caldey Abbey is keen to take the initiative to listen to the evidence and act on the recommendations of the independent reviewer.

What will be reviewed?

The review will examine in detail the allegations made by Kevin O`Connell and the management of those allegations by Caldey Abbey and identify any learning. The terms of reference for the review have been agreed and are on the website.

How will the review be undertaken?

By considering all the written material kept by Caldey Abbey and the Diocese of Menevia and meeting with Kevin O’Connell to listen to him and consider any material he has and by interviewing all appropriate staff and others and relevant professionals. Other past cases will be considered as part of the context of the review however, it is not the purpose of this review to make any specific findings of fact in relation to other past cases.

Can I have an interview with Fr Jan Rossey now about the review?

Whilst the review is underway it is inappropriate for Fr Jan to comment as he should have the opportunity to consider the evidence and the findings of the review first.

Who can I speak to about the review then?

Maria Battle, the Caldey Island Safeguarding Lead would be happy to speak to you, although what she can say whilst the review in underway is limited as the evidence is still being gathered. You can also contact the Religious Life Safeguarding Service or the Police. Contact details can be found on the press release.

Is this review connected to the Caldey Island Survivors Campaign?

The independent reviewer is considering the allegations of Kevin O`Connell who leads the campaign However, the review is independent of both this campaign and of Caldey Abbey.

Is it safe for me and my family to go to Caldey?

Yes. In line with best practice elsewhere all monks and staff have received safeguarding training. A new Safeguarding Policy has been adopted along with new processes and reporting systems. A new Safeguarding Lead (Maria Battle) has been appointed, who is a former Deputy Children’s Commissioner for Wales.

Is the review truly independent if Caldey Abbey is funding it?

Absolutely. Caldey Abbey does not know what the reviewer will find and will not be able to influence or modify its findings or recommendations.

What do I do if I have information that might be relevant to the review?

Please contact Maria Battle, the Religious Life Safeguarding Service or the Police (contact details are on the press release).

Caldey Safeguarding Review: Terms of Reference

Commissioned by Caldey Abbey

Background

  1. Caldey Abbey is committed to providing an environment in which there are effective procedures for safeguarding and protecting all who visit, live on or work on the Island.
  • In common with many other organisations, Caldey Abbey has, in the past, received disclosures and allegations involving members of the community about their behaviour towards children.
  • As part of the commitment to safeguarding, Caldey Abbey wishes to examine in detail the allegations made by KO and Review the management of these allegations by its community.

Review

  • The Abbey has commissioned a leading Independent Safeguarding Consultant, Jan Pickles OBE, to undertake this Review.  Her point of contact will be the Caldey Abbey Safeguarding Lead Maria Battle.
  • The role of the independent Reviewer is to identify any learning for Caldey Abbey from this case.

Methodology

  1. Review all written material, correspondence and files kept by Caldey Abbey and the Diocese of Menevia relating to this case.
    1. Meet with KO and his support/advocate (if wished) to identify any material he may have in his possession related to the allegations and their handling of.
    1. Interview all staff and others who are deemed appropriate by the Reviewer.
    1. Discuss the case with relevant professionals to gain their insight into the events at the time.
    1. Prepare a written analysis of the material and prepare a high-level ‘key points’ report focusing on lessons learned and guidance for future best practice.

The Review process will be overseen by the Safeguarding Lead Maria Battle who will support the Review by facilitating access to documents and speaking with key staff about the purpose of the Review.

  • Prior to the Review commencing, the Safeguarding Lead will liaise with the Dyfed Powys Police to ensure that they are content with the scope of this Review and the proposed methodology.
  • Bearing in mind the historical context other relevant bodies including the Children’s Commissioner for Wales should be informed of the Review.

Limitations

  • This Review will encourage self-reflection with a focus on systems, policy and practice; it will be about learning and not attributing blame.  If the Review identifies any behaviours that are of a criminal or safeguarding nature Caldey Abbey will follow its safeguarding policy (currently dated November 2022 but a refreshed version is about to be finalised) and make a referral to the appropriate authorities.
  • The Reviewer will also independently make appropriate referrals if the Review identifies any behaviours that are of a criminal or safeguarding nature.
  1.  Where the independent Reviewer provides advice and recommendations during the Review, Caldey Abbey will consider and will act on these rather than wait for the conclusion of the Review.
  1. The Review will avoid ‘hindsight bias’ to ensure actions or the lack of action following allegations are viewed at the time they came to light.
  1. This Review is not a legal inquiry.  Past cases will be considered as part of the context at the time of KO’s allegation; however, it is not the purpose of this Review to determine criminal or civil liability of individuals or to make any specific findings of fact in relation to past cases.

Final points

  1. This Review is about Caldey Abbey taking ownership and responsibility for ensuring it learns lessons from the past and creates a safe environment for all today.  The output from the Review is the property of the Caldey Abbey.  The Abbey is, however, committed to sharing the output and recommendations with KO and the statutory partners where that would be helpful to do so.
  1. Whilst this Review has been commissioned by Caldey Abbey and is being paid for by Caldey Abbey, the output and recommendations will be those freely and independently formed by the independent Reviewer.
  1. Any change to these Terms must be agreed by all parties in writing.

Caldey Island Survivors Campaign – Easter 2023

FoxyFoxSubstac

Guest Blog.

The more they try to hide from us, the harder we shall seek

The more they try to bury the truth, the deeper we will dig

The more they try to blind us, the truth we will see

The more they try to bully us, the stronger we will become.

by Kevin O’Connor, Caldey Island Survivor

Yesterday I posted a summary of the abuse by monks on Caldey Island going back decades and the refusal of the Abbot to even apologise. Caldey Island Child Abuse Summary [9s].

This current post details some actions you can take to help Caldey Island Survivors Campaign to get that apology they so desperately want and deserve.

Caldey Island Survivors Group

Survivors of abuse from Caldey Island formed a group called Caldey Island Survivors Campaign. Kevin is launching the latest part of survivors campaign tomorrow on Good Friday, to bring more attention to the decades of child abuse carried out by the monks on Caldey Island and what you can do to help. The launch will be on Sonia Poulton’s daily morning show Rise on BNT. Twitter Sonia Poulton [18] Brand New Tube Sonia Poulton [19].

On Saturday 8th April, the first boat sails to the island for the opening of the public season on Caldey Island. Children are at risk from monks and other paedophiles the island has attracted for decades.

Easter time is obviously a particularly significant time to many as the time of crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. The main part of the Caldey Island Survivors campaign is to ask people to fill in the Caldey Island Monks Prayer Request Form, to request that the monks pray for the very child victims raped and abused by the monks on Caldey Island.

We are hoping that will get their attention!

Aims of Caldey Island Survivors Campaign

  • Public Apology – There should be a full public apology from Caldey Island Abbot Daniel Van Sandvoort for the child rapes and child abuse carried out by monks on Caldey Island. Abbot Santvoort has been the Caldey Abbot for 23 years and on the island for 33 years.
  • Private Apologies to victims – The children abused by monks should also receive an individual private apology from the Abbot.
  • Child Protection – Children on the island deserve proper protection. The Monks have finally been forced to have vetting, but the DBS vetting needs to be properly supervised by the Religious Life Safeguarding Service [RLSS] [5]
  • Children’s minister for the Welsh Assembly should recognise the extent of the abuse, the imperative for an apology from Abbot and that the Welsh Assembly need to launch an inquiry into decades of abuse on the island.

Actions for Public to help the Survivors Campaign

We want to make sure that the abuse survivors are uppermost in Caldey Island Monks thoughts and prayers. Survivors desperately want recognition of their abuse and an apology before they can begin healing. We are asking people to fill in a prayer request form on the Caldey Island website to

  • ask the monks to pray for victims and survivors of child abuse at the hands of Caldey Island Monks on Caldey Island
  • ask the monks to pray that Abbot Daniel van Santvoort gives a full public apology to all the victims of child abuse on the island and at the hands of Caldey Island Monks. An apology is the only moral and Godly action for Abbot Daniel van Santvoort to take.
  • ask the monks to pray that Abbot Daniel van Santvoort gives an individual private apology to each victim

This is a screenshot of the prayer request form, and if you click on it, it will take you to the form itself…

Caldey Island Monks Prayer Request Form [2] https://caldeyislandwales.com/prayer-request

Plan B, should the Prayer Request Form go down for any reason, is an email address that you can send prayer requests to, or any other queries… Email inquiries@caldey-island.co.uk

We would ask you to do which of these actions you can or feel drawn to. If you only have time to do one action, please fill in the Monks Prayer Request form for an apology for abuse survivors.

  • Fill in the Monks Prayer Request form to the monks for the victims of abuse by Caldey Island monks and an apology from Abott Daniel van Santvoort
  • Boycott Caldey Island and all products #BoycottTheBrothers
  • Support Caldey Island Survivors Campaign by buying some of their hand beaten recycled copper crosses and other items hand made by survivors.
  • Pray for the victims and survivors of Caldey Island Child Abuse
  • Sign up to the Caldey Island Survivors Campaign mailing list to keep in touch for further actions – Caldey Island Survivors [1] or here [2] Scroll down.
  • Email /Contact actions

Email / Contact Actions

Contact Rocio Cifuentes, the Welsh Assembly Children’s Commissioner for Wales. Ask for her to recognise the importance of an apology from the Abbot for the victims and survivors of child abuse on Calday Island and by monks on the Island. With recognition and an apology the victims of child abuse at the hands of monks on Caldey Island can start to achieve some closure for the first time. Survivors Campaign would like her to support the call for an investigation into the child abuse over on the Island over decades to find out what has happened.

Contact RLSS

Caldey Island survivors say there needs to be independent safeguarding checks. Police DBS vetting should now to be supervised by the Religious Life Safeguarding Service [5] [RLSS] but the Survivors Campaign want to be ensure that this will actually take place and to a high standard and that they are watching. There is some debate as to how effective RLSS are. See Pat Mills blog [17]

Please ask for confirmation of RLSS oversight of Caldey Island’s DBS vetting, what levels of DBS vetting the monks are subject to and what RLSS oversight means in practice.

Copper Crosses from Survivors

The survivors group and particularly Kevin has spent much time and money trying to raise awareness of the abuse that happened, and trying to get the truth and justice and the extent of what has actually happened to children at the hands of monks on Caldey Island over the last 70 years.

The Survivors Group Campaign now raise funds by making hand beaten recycled copper crosses and other items. These crosses are hand made with love and Kevin described with passion what they represent…

“The reason I make these crosses is that I felt that through all my life, I was carrying the cross that the abusers had placed on my back. Their sins were the weight I carried for decades. The tears I shed left a trail which Jesus followed.”

Even though the weight of their sins became too heavy at times and I fell to my knees with depression and feelings of loneliness, Jesus picked me up and helped me to carry on my path. Without Jesus and my good wife Carol I not sure where I would be today. Making these crosses is done by the hands of survivors of historic child abuse. We make them with our hearts. We know their feelings and hurt. Every cross we make is a symbol for survivors past, present and future child abuse all over the world.

The copper pipe I use is reclaimed from builders who donate them to my campaign.
I clean the copper pipe and then hammer it into shape. Then I solder them. We then bless them with Holy water.

Please email caldeyislandsurvivors@protonmail.com for ordering crosses. The price is £25.00 including most postages. Please let me know of your address and we confirm that. With all my heart I thank you.

The hand made copper crosses are particularly stunning I think.

Email caldeyislandsurvivors@protonmail.com for ordering crosses and other items. The price is £25.00 for crosses including most postages. Please let me know of your address and we confirm that. With all my heart I thank you.

Boycott Caldey Island Monks

Caldey Island monks sell products that they make on the island. But they are tainted with child abuse. Please boycott the island and not buy any of their products. Not only have the hands that abused children made the products, but the products like ice cream and chocolate were used to lure children in to their abuse. The dairy is where the ice cream and chocolate are made and the room off the dairy was used to abuse children.

The Abbot, Daniel van Santvoort, who refuses to apologise to survivors of abuse by monks on the island is in the centre of the picture, surrounded by the abuse and product.

Caldey No.1 – Caldey Island perfume comes with the stench of child abuse…

Caldey Island is opening to the public on Saturday 8th April. Caldey Island, off Tenby, Pembrokeshire, SA70 7UJ, Wales. email inquiries@caldey-island.co.uk

Introduction I saw this powerful story from Kevin on Pat Mills’ excellent blog on child abuse Pat Mills blog [4] . Caldey Island Monks have carried out child abuse on an industrial scale. At present they refuse to acknowledge or apologise for their abuse of children. Furthermore they trafficked children to other men for abuse on the island…

Christa Ford12 hr agoWe are following the survivors and we are praying for them and I’ve just taken a few of the action steps that you have called us to do in your email and I’m more than glad to make those cries for God’s will to be done and for their healing to take place! I sent a prayer request to the monks to before complete repentance and a public apology and a private apology and then also sent an email to the government leader woman that you suggested. I will try to buy one of their crosses soon also! Whatever you’ve done to the least of these my brother you’ve done to me and whatever you have not done until he’s my brother and you’ve not done it to me are the words of JesusLIKE (1)REPLY

Caldey Island Child Abuse Summary

FoxyFoxSubstack

The child raping Cistercian monks on Caldey Island were brought to the attention of the public in 2017 largely thanks to three brave survivors, pseudonyms Charlotte, Emily and Adele. Their story was well reported by Amanda Gearing. 2017 Nov 18 Guardian Revealed: monk who abused children on ‘crime free’ Caldey Island for decades. [21]

It was revealed that there had been multiple victims of child abuse by a monk, in the 1970’s and 1980’s. The serial child abuser was Father Thaddeus Kotik. Caldey Island Abbot Robert O’Brien had covered it up when it was reported to him in the late 1980’s. He did not report it to the Police. The fact that Kotik had been on the island since 1947 raised concerns of decades of further abuse.

Civil Legal Case v Abbey

Charlotte and another female victim/survivor/ [VS] Emily had reported the offences to the Principal of their school, St. Phillip’s Christian College in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia in the late 1980s. Unfortunately the Deputy Principal of the school, Richard Rule, acted as an enabler of abuse and told the girls they “didn’t need to talk of this again because God has forgiven everyone”. The article from 2017 stated that Richard Rule was running a child care centre. This obviously raises/raised safeguarding concerns for the children in his care.

Charlotte, with some research, and doing the job many think the police should be doing tracked down five other women who had been abused. In 2014 in the abscence of any public prosecution, the 6 women hired Tracey Emmott of Emmott Snell solicitors to lead the case of 6 women against Caldey Abbey for an acknowledgment, apology, and compensation.

The Abbey however was not cooperative, backflipped on various previous admissions and used various legal tricks to avoid taking responsibility. The upshot was that the case had to be settled out of court and with meagre compensation payments for the survivor/ victims abused by Caldey Monks. Very importantly there was no apology.

Child Abuse

After the 2017 publicity, more survivors came forward and more revelations followed. To date the survivors campaign say around 30 survivors have come forward. This is still expected to be only a small fraction, due to the length of time the perpetrators were abusing, the number of monks actually abusing and the number of monks who at the very least knew about the child rapes and child abuse and were thus enablers.

This is the testimony from one survivor…

When Father Thaddaeus was abusing me, while he masturbated over me, at least a dozen monks were also masturbating and ejaculated over me. They took off my T shirt as it was drenched in semen. In my view every Monk knew, even the Abbot. It was industrial abuse of children.

Abuse has now been reported on Caldey Island, since at least since the 1960’s [61]. The legal case relied on abuses in the 1980’s and 1990’s but survivors believe that child abuse is still going on, precisely because so many monks knew about it.

There were child abuser visitors who were monks, like Father Charles Jeffries, a friend of Thaddeus Katik, but there were also other child abusing men who had become used to turning up on the Island every year. It was a safe place to abuse children with no consequence, as Caldey Island had no child protection measures in place and police never patrol the island, ever. Sympathetic monks could be trusted to smooth over anything that might be dangerous to abusers.

Even when children visit the island in the summer there are no police patrols, and so Caldey has become a magnet for child rapists.

Perversely, the “first crime” official on the island was recorded in 2016 for a dad mishandling his own son. Father who manhandled his ‘misbehaving’ seven–year-old son [76]. That “first crime” report of course indicates how reality is different from perception and official record as the monks had been abusing children for years.

Whistleblowing on Abuse and Abuse Deniers

Part of the problem of perception and official record is that survivors are not believed and no action is taken. For survivors it is often like living in a parallel universe, where the normal rules that seem to apply to everyone else do not apply to you. One raped child was told by the abusive monk that if he told anyone about the abuse the following would happen

  • “God would turn his back on me
  • The devil would come and take me either from under the bed or through the mirror at night
  • A severed hand would come through the letter box, climb up the stairs onto my bed and strangle me” Cistercian Monk Child Abuse and Trafficking on Caldey Island [7s]

This would be scary enough as a child – raped by a monk, supposedly a representative of a higher power of good and then threatened that God would turn his back on them, the innocent victim of abuse. That the devil would then get him and a severed hand strangle him.

But when the child does find the courage to overcome those threats and tell about the abuse, everyone around denies or covers up the abuse. There was no help from the parents of one child as they actually pimped the child to the monks, whilst supposedly the child was under the care of the local authority. Children are told that the abuse did not happen as monks would not do that sort of thing. The children are gaslighted, ignored, told not to say such wicked things, told that God has forgiven the abusers, or even worse has forgiven everyone – as though the abused child needed to be forgiven. The innocent abused children are often even punished for telling the truth. They learn to keep it to themselves.

This scenario of people not believing that you were abused can continue even when you disclose the abuse as an adult. The survivors have already been through the hell of abuse, struggled through their childhood of not being believed most likely with PTSD and other mental health effects. Whilst a distinction is made between physical and mental health – these are physical effects – just in the brain. The neural pathways in the brain formed under abuse and stress are not the ones that ideally would be formed in a kind loving atmosphere. These pathways are further confused as the love often given by an abuser as part of the grooming process is often welcomed, is lacking in the rest of the child’s life, it is what a child yearns for. This love becomes all mixed up with the unwelcome abuse taking place. Often abuse is taking place even before sex drives have kicked in. One of our basic human drives for sex which is usually associated with pleasure is now associated with pain and suffering.

It is often the people who have had kind loving upbringings that cannot see outside of their own paradigm. They cannot empathise, they seemingly have cognitive dissonance and in their ignorance become vociferous that others are making wicked accusations against kindly people. They are blind to their own ignorance, ignorance not only of the abuse itself but of the system that allows it and hides it. Instead of taking their anger out on the perpetrator they take it out yet again on the victim.

An example of the inner conflict between yearning for love and the bad lessons learned as a victim of abuse is shown by Mark. Mark was a victim of abuse by Kotik. As Kotik was a family friend, ie had groomed the family in preparation for grooming the child, then Kotik kept seeing Mark. This continued even when Mark has left his parents. Mark even in the course of time took his own son to Caldey to see Kotik. It should be pointed out that Mark ensured that his son never left his side.

Mark now is horrified at what he did, saying he cannot forgive himself.

“Looking back, I cannot forgive myself for putting [my son] in such a vulnerable position despite me or another adult being with him all the time,” Mark said.

But what Mark did is understandable and there is no need to forgive himself. It takes time to heal from abuse. It takes time to make new neural pathways and stop using those old destructive neural pathways. It is much harder to correct or relearn new pathways as an adult, than it was to lay down defective pathways as a child, when we are like a sponge of learning, especially under conditions of high stress. To Mark’s great credit he has formed new neural pathways and understood the destructiveness of the old ones.

Anyone want to explore those issues on healing see Caylen Hartwell Mind Control Survivor [11] where there is a good interview and links. I would also recommend Joseph Chilton Pearce Magical Child [12] which gives the ideal blueprint, the correct stimulation, of what inputs a child’s brain needs over time.

As as adult, survivors courageously tell their stories and often meet even more harassment and bullying. Some people absurdly demand “concrete proof” of abuse. Concrete proof from years earlier when those being abused were children, not even comprehending what horrific things were happening to them, often by people who they trusted and even loved.

What concrete proof do these people want? No concrete proof can possibly be given in 99.9 % of cases. What the “concrete proofers” appear to mean is that they will never believe survivors, that they cannot accept that these horrors happen, they appear to not want to cross the barrier of reality and want to live in their fantasy world. In essence they take an anti survivor stance, whilst hiding behind the veneer of an excuse about proof to protect themselves.

These concrete proofers are often the ones who have had loving background and have little understanding of how others had suffered. Conversely they can also sometimes be people who are denying their own abuse, afraid that if they admit that abuse happens they then have to face up the harsh reality of their own abuse, rather than box it away and pretend it did not happen. Maybe the idea of a monk being an abuser is something people cannot comprehend, or they have cognitive dissonance at the evil that some people can perpetrate, or worse still they have an agenda so they side with the abusers.

Locations of Caldey Island Abuse

There are plenty of hidden places all over island where abuse can and did take place. Children have been abused in many places over the island including the woods, ruined buildings and isolated rocky coves near the beach.

Kevin was abused and went to Calday in 2019 to face up to and overcome his demons and to help his healing. Amongst the places he was abused were some ruins…

Below is Kevin arriving back on the island. The video of Kevin’s visit, click on pic to open video in new tab.

2019 Jun 17 Odysee S4C Caldey Island Abbey Catholic Abuse Kevin O’Connell 23min57s [oca5] #CaldeyIsland #csa #ChildAbuse #revisit #monks #cistercian #catholic #benedictine

The monastery garage was used to entice children by having a chest full of sweets in there. The room beside the dairy was used to abuse after the child was lured into the Dairy with a bribe of chocolate or ice cream made there.

Caldey Island Abbot’s Kitchen Chocolate and Caldey ice cream were made by the hands of child abusers and in a circular horrible dystopian irony the chocolate and ice cream was then used to help lure more children into more abuse.

Please boycott any products made by the monks.

As well as the monks I gather there maybe about 40 residents on the island. Resident children as well as visitor children were abused.

Caldey Island Abbey Monks, Brothers, Fathers, Abbot Responsibility For Abuse

The problem with protecting children on Caldey Island is that the Abbey / the monks and in particular the current Abbot Daniel van Santvoort, exploit every opportunity they can to hide the truth. Essentially the Abbot not to be transparent, but to obfuscate, use loopholes, use grey areas, use legal dodges and delays.

These include

  • Caldey Island is a privately owned. The Abbey either does not allow the police to patrol or the police choose to not patrol
  • Child Safeguarding checks were denied as it was claimed that the monks do not mix with children so do not need safeguarding checks. Luckily survivors had the photographic evidence that the monks do mix with children so at least now the monks are officially subject to a DBS vetting check.
  • The monks refuse to accept that child safeguarding is overseen by the local Diocese of Menevia in Swansea, who have been advised the Abbey on their safeguarding policies. I presume this is the local Catholic diocese. Caldey Abbey does not come under their responsibility but Bishop Tom Burns said that “the Abbey has insisted on retaining its oversight of any specific cases, past, present, or in the future.”
  • The Abbey claims now to have a child safeguarding officer. However the “safeguarding officer” is an ex policeman. The police have failed the children and survivors over the years, and having an ex police as safeguarding officer is not independent nor is seen as independent. Caldey Survivors group do not trust an ex member of the police, an organisation who have consistently failed for decades to protect the children. How can he be impartial and seen to be impartial?
  • The Abbot and Abbey use opaque ownership of the island to evade responsibility and culpability. Caldey Island was bought by the Cistercian Monks in 1925 to be occupied by a group of monks from Scourmont Abbey in Belgium. Scourmont denied legal liability for the abuse yet Kotik a major abuser spent time at Scourmont. Armand Veilleux, Scourmont Abbot from 1999 – 2017, claimed Caldey was an autonomous house in civil and canon law. Teresa Elwes, a devotee who has maintained a relationship with Caldey and Scourmont for 40 years and knew Kotik, said the mother house, famous for its brewery could afford to compensate victims properly. [42]

Abbey and Abbot Legal Shenanigans

The civil legal process was dragged out from 2014 – 2016 due to Abbot Daniel van Santvoort refusing to admit responsibility or even give an apology. This is an age for suffering survivors, for whom the decision to take the monks on, was supposed to help heal, help bring some resolution to their bodies and minds still suffering from the abuse by monks. [21]

They did not achieve what they wanted. The abbey

  • backflipped on its previous admissions and claimed instead it had no knowledge of the alleged sexual abuse.
  • that there was an “evidential disadvantage” in that none of the monks at the abbey during the time of the allegations were still alive. The defence therefore required the abused children prove each offence.
  • claimed it was not liable as the priest was not employed by the abbey to provide care for children
  • invoked the statute of limitations, claiming the victims were out of time to sue for damages and it was not possible now for the abbey to get a fair trial
  • asked the court to find the claim should not be allowed because the seriousness of the allegations was likely to attract attention that may threaten the continued existence of the abbey!!

“The defendant tried to avoid their responsibilities by relying on the time limit loophole claiming the abuse happened too long ago and the claims were too late,” Emmott said. “It took the issuing of court proceedings before out of court settlements were offered, and even then my clients’ request for a formal apology as part of the settlement package was never forthcoming.” Daniel van Santvoort refused even to comment when the story came out.

It should be pointed out that whilst not having achieved what they wanted, they did not fail, they achieved much. They were the Caldey Survivor pioneers. They drew a line in the sand saying that they would not accept being raped and tortured and abused and continue to keep silent. They planted the survivor flag and said we not retreating, we are not cowering in our bunkers. They climbed out of the bunkers of despair and went over the top and advanced. They went to the heart of the beast that had attacked them as innocent children. They fought the beast as best they could in a system that by accident or design favours the abusers.

They stood up to be counted. They achieved dignity and respect and an example for others to follow. They have built a bridgehead so that others can build on their achievements. I recognise your courage, your bravery and your desperation even to take this action to achieve healing from the legacy of what the monks did to you. I recognise what you will have been through in this legal battle, which is on top of the effects of the abuse. Disappointments and delays, emotional highs and lows, mental batterings and bruisings, frustration at the mindnumbing unfairness of it all, despair at the delays and further delays and machinations and procedures of a unfit justice system. Sheer disbelief that the monks who claim to be good but actually are defending evil in this topsy turvy world. Charlotte, Emily, Adele and the other 3 Calday Pioneers I salute you and your immense contribution, your achievement was huge.

Recognition must also go to Amanda Gearing whose article broke the story into public awareness. 2017 Nov 18 Guardian Revealed: monk who abused children on ‘crime free’ Caldey Island for decades [21]. This article not only exposed the Caldey Island monks but encouraged others to come forward and also exposed more and more abuse and abusers. Amanda wrote about nine excellent articles in all, sensitive articles full of information not sensationalism. They were talking truth to power, which to me is what what a journalist should do, but is now so rare in these days of mockingbird media narrative set on high with churnalists lower down carrying out their orders and taking home paycheques. I salute Amanda for her contribution to truth.

Some who came forward publicly are known to be Mark, Kevin O’Connell on behalf of himself and his dead sister Rebecca O’Connell, and Joanna Biggs who has also fought bravely and successfully to clear her sisters name, Theresa from lies told by nun Sister Sheila Singleton. Theresa died in a swimming accident off Caldey when aged 6 after having been given permission to swim by the nun who later denied it and Theresa’s good name in death, was besmirched by the nun to cover up her own culpability. They both had been abused by monks.

Mark, Kevin and Joanna I salute you too. Rare courage from extraordinary people.

Many times, “The Abbey” is referred to. The abbey is a building, whether or not it has legal standing in law I do not know, or what legal entity or construct the monks of Caldey Island hide behind, but what I do know is that the Abbot is in charge. The buck stops with him.

Abbot Daniel van Sandvoort

The current Abbot is Daniel van Santvoort. Abbot Daniel van Sandvoort went to Caldey in 1990, became Abbot in 1999 and is the current Abbot. [33]

The newspaper put it diplomatically by using the word “backflip”. I will be more direct, Abbot Daniel van Santvoort LIED when he said he did not know that there was previous abuse. As well as lying Daniel van Santvoort did everything he could to stop natural justice for the children who had been raped by Caldey Island monks. He refused to give an apology and only meagre compensation. A Godly man would surely have been contrite, and offered a generous apology and compensation commensurate with the crimes perpetrated by the Monks of Caldey Island.

Theere has been no proper apology for the abuse, there has been a limp apology that the abuse was not reported to the police when the previous Abbot was told about it. He was told about it by survivors, parents and staff.

Daniel van Santvoort was Abbot and hence in charge when

  • the Abbey lied about the Abbey not previously not knowing about Katik’s abuse, despite evidence to the contrary
  • the Abbey fought tooth and nail to deny 6 survivors even an apology for their abuse
  • Paul Ashton, a child sex offender stayed on the Island 2004-11,
  • Father John Shannon stayed 2008-9 who turned out to be a child sex offender
  • John Cronin stayed for a month in 2009, another sex offender.
  • Brother Daniel said the abbey was working with Children’s Commissioner for Wales, however Sally Holland has denied that is the case.[64]
  • many people and news organisations have asked Abbot van Santvoort for comments, but mostly he arrogantly refuses. eg Despite contacting the Brother [Santvoort] several times, he never responded. ITV [46]
  • it was stated that “the seriousness of the allegations was likely to attract attention that may threaten the continued existence of the abbey”

There is a pattern. This man, the Caldey Island Abbot Daniel van Santvoort (Gerard) has acted to cover up child abuse by Caldey Island monks.

Abbot Daniel van Sandvoort is also reported to have a very quick temper, not something that most people might associate with an Abbot.

Daniel van Santvoort has resisted adequate child protection measures on Calday Island. Why would someone do that, never mind a supposed man of God?

Brothers and Fathers at Caldey Island

Whilst Santvoort undoubtedly has responsibility for covering up the abuse and his inadequate and frankly nasty and unChristian actions towards survivors, then there is a wider responsibilty of all the monks. The brothers and fathers must question themselves as to whether they are happy to be part of an organisation that covers up child abuse and treats the survivors of abuse by monks so badly. Even if the abuse was all in the past, which survivors do not believe to be the case, monks live on the island that the abusers lived on, use the same rooms that children were abused in. They use benches, the same cutlery that abusers used, the same dairy room that abuse occurred in.

Do the brothers and fathers respect an Abbot that treats survivors of child abuse like dirt, that were abused by a monk from their establishment ?

Do they respect an Abbot that refuses to even give an apology for child abuse perpetrated by monks on the island that you live on as monks?

An apology means so much. Why does Abbot Daniel van Santvoort not give an apology?

These Cistercian monks at Caldey refuse to take responsibility for the children abused by their own on the island, over decades, not isolated occurences, and the true extent of which has not been revealed yet. Have the monks no shame?

Child Safeguarding

The Monks now are now finally “vetted” to make sure they have no previous relevant convictions. In the UK is called a Disclosure and Barring Service [DBS] check. DBS Checks[13]. It was previously denied that monks mixed with children but following photographic evidence provided by survivors, that incontrovertible fact has now been accepted. There are various levels of DBC check, and the exact level /extent applied at Calday is not clear as yet.

The survivors group say that the DBS checks need to be properly and rigorously overseen by Religious Life Safeguarding Service [RLSS] [5] an independent team of safeguarding professionals offering safeguarding services to the Religious of the Catholic Church in England and Wales. Kevin from the survivors group says it paramount that the RLSS properly oversee DBS, so that children and vulnerable adults visiting and staying on retreat on Caldey Island are safe.

ITV Wales also contacted the Diocese of Menevia in Swansea. Caldey Abbey is not under their responsibility but they have been advising the Abbey on their safeguarding policies and practices for the last 18 months.

The Bishop Tom Burns said that “however, the Abbey has insisted on retaining its oversight of any specific cases, past, present, or in the future.”

Police

  • Dyfed Powys Police refuse to patrol the island in the season April to Sept, which is when visitors are allowed, even the high risk time in the summer holidays. This is an obvious risk to children. Why won’t the Police patrol? This is especially risky for children when Caldey Island is known to child abusers and paedosadists to be a safe place for them to abuse.
  • Dyfed Powys Police refuse to release a public facing report on the results of previous investigations of child abuse on Caldey. Why?
  • Dyfed Powys Police refuse to carry out a full investigation of child abuse that has happened on Calday Island. Why? Previously they have given an excuse that a perpetrator, preusmably Katik, is dead. What about the dozen other perpetrators?
  • Dyfed Powys Police have ignored victims, reported crimes with crime numbers have been ignored
  • Survivors of abuse have felt harassed by Dyfed Powys Police for telling their stories of abuse.

Once such previous investigation was this, Dyfed-Powys Police Temp Det Supt, Ross Evans, said the investigation into allegations of non-recent sexual abuse on the island was ongoing and the force was working with known victims “to build a picture of events” [59] Is it not it time that survivors who have given many hours of statements to the Police received that picture of events that so affected and shaped their lives?

Dyfed Powys police why are they refusing to do a full on investigation to historic child abuse on Caldey Island and why have they ignored so many victims.

Two Welsh MP’s were living or had second homes on Caldey Island during the 1970’s, is this coincidence?

Welsh Assembly

The Welsh Assembly have done nothing. The Survivors Campaign that the Asembly turned them down 3 times for a Public Enquiry, it is unclear why. New evidence is coming forward all the time.

Children’s Commissioner for Wales is Rocio Cifuentes for the next 7 years. She has shown little interest in the plight of victims of child abuse from Caldey. Why will she not press for an Inquiry into abuse on the island that lasted for decades and a Police Public Facing Report on what has happened?

Conclusion

Caldey Island Abbot Daniel van Santvoort refuses to apologise for abuse committed by Caldey Island monks. He refuses to get independent safeguarding, he malevolently sought out every opportunity to cover up the child abuse that occurred.

If they were really God fearing monks, then you would think there would be contrition, profuse apology, atonement and restitution.

Is this a really a pedophile cult who dress in brown robes for protection and not actually monks who are abusers?

On Good Friday Calday Island Survivors group will launch their campaign to help bring attention to the abuse perpetrated by the Cistercian monks. A post will be posted here and a survivor Kevin will be giving more details to Sonia Poulton on Rise with BNT Twitter Sonia Poulton [15] Brand New Tube Sonia Poulton [16]

Cistercian Monk Child Abuse and Trafficking on Caldey Island

Introduction I saw this powerful story from Kevin on Pat Mills’ excellent blog on child abuse Pat Mills blog [4] . Caldey Island Monks have carried out child abuse on an industrial scale. At present they refuse to acknowledge or apologise for their abuse of children. Furthermore they trafficked children to other men for abuse on the island…

GOOD NEWS FROM CALDEY ISLAND SURVIVOR

Hi everyone, some good news.

Our campaign with the help of the RLSS ,

Religious Life Safeguarding Service .

All Monks on Caldey Island must be DBS police checked and all persons working as volunteers etc for the Monks must be DBS checked also.

This is a massive step for our campaign to get independant safeguarding for children staying and visiting Caldey island.

No longer will the Abbey be able to hide wanted Paedophiles from the police.

Rev Kevin Simpson the so called safeguarding Monk on Caldey refuses to meet me on zoom because of our campaign.

The more the Monks are silence about safeguarding , the more the abusers will abuse children in the future .

RLSS will be checking up on the DBS data base to make sure the Monks etc. will comply.

Thank you everyone for your ongoing support.

CALDEY ISLAND SURVIVOR OF MONKS

The powerful account below is by Kevin, a survivor of abuse by Cistercian monks on Caldey Island and by Catholic priests. It is the most defining and important example of organised Catholic sexual abuse of children.

It is damning evidence that Catholic paedophile rings exist, hitherto denied or ignored.  These priests and monks are not one-off individuals, one rotten apple, but a whole rotten orchard. It shows how Catholic predators focus their criminal attention on vulnerable families.

Although it has been exposed in Kevin’s local media, nothing has been done. Catholics just ignore these crimes which are hardly unique and are replicated in other Catholic communities, certainly amongst the De La Salles in Ipswich and in my Ipswich Catholic diocese when I was growing up.

But this is surely amongst the worst.

Kevin’s contact details are at the end of his account.  Anything anyone can do to help – such as getting this account in the national media – do let Kevin know.  Or passing this story on in your own social media. It is really important and needs to be known nationally.

Special thanks to Sonia Poulton, who had Kevin on her Rise with BNT show and put me in touch with him.

The year 1968

At 6 years old we lived in a rural village called Tregroes.

Tregroes was about 20 miles from the market town of Carmarthen.

I lived there with my family, my mam and dad, also a younger brother and sister as well as an older brother and sister.

I loved Tregroes as it was the first home we stayed longest in. I loved playing in the woods and the stream with my youngest siblings. We would help the local farmers bringing in the harvest.

We, the youngest siblings, went to Tregroes primary school.

It was a Welsh speaking school and it felt bit alien to us.

My home life was us spending as much time as we could out playing as we feared my dad as he was a horrible man and would beat us for any reason, so avoiding him was our quest.

We knew he had spent time in prison, but we still don’t know why.

My mam kepted us clean and fed and we ran in for jam butties and out we go in any weather. Our mam never stopped dad from beating us, maybe she feared him.

My dad never worked as he would not take orders from anyone, so we lived a poor life and dad relied on handouts from social services.

I never knew until 2021 I was under the court of protection and social services.

Social services introduced my parents to the local Catholic priest whose parish was in a small town a few miles away from us.

The Priest started to give my parents food, second clothes, toys and cash.

We young ones started to go to his church every Saturday for Bible lessons and Sundays for Confession and Mass.

The Priest was very keen to get me to be an Altar boy, so he decided to send my parents, my youngest siblings and me for a free holiday on Caldey Island.

Caldey Island

I know that my parents left me with the Monks for a few months.

They became lifelong friends with Father  (Thad) Thaddeus and Father (C) Charles.

I don’t have much memory of staying on Caldey, only the private garden in the Abbey ground where I played, and my memories have been hidden in a dark part of my brain which is probably best.

I remember Father C taking me home from Caldey Island. When I got home, I made my way upstairs to my bedroom and saw that my brother’s bed was taken out into my sister’s bedroom.

I also saw a bolt on the inside of my room at the top of the door.

I wouldn’t dare question it.

Before supper Father C said grace, and off we went to bed as that was the routine in our house.

The one thing I missed while on Caldey was my bed.

At some time during the night, I got woken up by someone getting into my bed, I soon realized it was Father C, he started to touch me in my groin area and then he started to rape me even though I did not know at the time what he was doing.

I screamed and cried for my dad and mam, but no one came to rescue me.

The following morning, I woke up alone in my bed, I got dressed and went downstairs, everyone was acting normal morning except my dad took me to another room, pulling down my pants and put some sort of cream on my private bits, he did not say a single word to me.

After breakfast Father C wanted us to do confession with him.

When it got to my turn he just spoke sexually and upset me.

Father C went back to his parish on the Sussex/Surry boarders.

My parents arranged for my 2 youngest siblings and myself to go back with Father C to spend some time with him there.

So, in time Father C came and picked us up and took us back to his parish.

Father C Parish

I was scared to go but had no choice.

When we arrived there, we were treated well and Father C did not abuse me which I was glad of.

He did bath the three of us. Father C ,over the holiday, took me to see other priests and Bishops in different parishes.

I knew then that he was showing them his prize, me.

Father C took us back home and again he raped me in my own bed.

The next day he went back to his Parish.

Now I was living in a world I did not understand.

A few weeks later Father C turned up and this time he had Father Thad with him.

That night Father C was in my bed again. God knows where Father Tadd slept that night, but I had my fears.

For the next 4-5 years Father C would abuse me at my home and now was taking me back to his Parish where priests and Bishops gang raped me. It was a terrifying time and the only escape I had was to go into fantasy world where  my mind mode would protect me from the horrors. It lasted for hours or days.

I remember the room I slept in and I used to look out the window at what I thought then were Christmas trees, I also watched the birds as they were an escape, too.

I also saw another boy there once as I went  to the toilet.

Around same age and blond hair wearing white Y fronts, we looked at each other and knew what we were there for.

Most mornings I woke up naked and there’d be underpants on the bed. Father C or someone else used to come in with breakfast and a tablet and it seemed like days turned into nights, I had no notion of time, as the skies darkened, my fear would start, and I just watched the door handle, knowing any minute someone would come get me.

When the evening got darker, I would be taken into a living room were there’d be up to a dozen priests and bishops waiting for me. I’d be given another tablet and some sweet drink ( Mead ) then a bishop or priest would go to the back of me and take my underwear off and then I would just go into safe mode.

At the age of 9

When I became an altar boy in my Parish, I was given a free holiday to Caldey Island, and I was going without any family members.

When I first saw Caldey Island from the boat from Tenby it looked like paradise, the long beach loads of children playing and having fun.

I felt very happy now and away from Father C etc and I settled in that night struggling to sleep from excitement.

The following day after early prayers we went down to the main beach, and we were put in groups and played games.

A Monk came over and said to me he was a friend of my parents, and I did recognize him as Father Thadd.

He gave me some chocolate that the Monks made on Caldey. It was a real and very rare treat. Father Thadd starting taking me away from my group of children. We spent lots of times over the week just sitting in the sand dunes, eating chocolate and Father Thadd stroking my hair and kissing top of my head. I felt a love from him that I was not getting at home. Even though he never said much, I grew fond of him.

The week went fast and soon I was on the beach waiting for the Tenby boat to arrive to take me home. Father Thadd hugged me, gave me loads of chocolate to take home.

I felt a sadness in my heart as Father Thadd disappeared from view.

Arriving back home  I told everyone about my holiday and Father Thadd and shared my chocolates which were gladly received, but I was now back  into the clutches of Father C.

I spent more time away from home than I was at home even the neighbours  remember that today and remembering Father C’s car been at our house.

Our Parish priest soon told me that I would be going back to Caldey Island the following year for two weeks this time and my youngest sister would be going with me.  I could not wait till that day arrived as it was not just escaping Father C and his evil friends but meeting Father Thadd who I loved so much.

At the age of 10

We arrived on Caldey Island and Father Thadd was waiting for me. He hugged me and said hello to my sister. I told him I like to see him the next day.

Father Tadd came down to see me on the beach next day, waving chocolates and taken up to the sand dunes.

Eating the chocolates sitting on Father Thadd’s knees he started to grope me between my legs and kissing me wildly on the lips, I was so scared and upset that he was no different than Father C.

Every day now he came and dragged me away, while our carers and the Nuns watched and did nothing to stop it.

Now I was taken to the old ruins where other monks were there waiting. Father Thadd gave me Mead and sat down on what I have always called an Altar stone where he groped and masturbated over me. The other monks also masturbated over me.

Now I hated Father Thadd and Caldey Island.

Every day he took me to the ruins, I used to stare at old bottles while I was being abused, nothing else I could do. Nowhere to run and hide, I felt like trapped and often thought I would try to swim back to Tenby, but I would have not survived the crossing.

Each day I cried coming back to the beach, but no one cared, my sister would run up to me and we’d hug, she had been raped by Father Tadd. I knew then what this so-called Holy Island was.

What I saw on the beach was industrial abuse of children dragged away into dark damp caves to be raped, the ruins and the woods by not only monks and priest but men coming onto the island as it was a safe haven for them to abuse and rape children as young as three years old. When we left Caldey I never wanted to go back there. I hated everything about it.

Back home

Our lives now will never be the same.

In my Parish church before Mass, I went to confession and told the priest that horrible things had happened to me on Caldey and I felt disgusted with my body. I did not mention my sister was raped and I glad I had not told him for the following reasons.

When I went into the vestry to change into my Altar boy gowns the priest took to one side and told me if I ever mention anything about Caldey Island and the Monks, three things will happen to me.

1/

God would turn his back on me.

2/

The devil would come and take me either from under the bed or through the mirror at night.

3/

A severed hand would come through the letter  box climb up the stairs onto my bed and strangle me.

The nightmares I had were terrifying and still today I will not have a letter box in my front door even though I know i be ok, it’s my mind mode.

At 11 years old

My parents and the Parish priest made me return to Caldey Island.

I cried and did not want to go back but again I had no choice, I was living in fear.

My youngest brother came with me.

Arriving on Caldey it was not long before Father Thadd came looking for me and wanted to take my brother with him. But I would go with Father Thadd instead as I did not want him to start on my brother.

My brother remembers this and what Father C was doing to me.

Again, Father Thadd would take me to the ruins, and it all started again abusing me with others watching on the Altar stone.

This time I started to think that they would kill me as how could they  hide this abuse from being discovered? And maybe this explained a mystery I had about an incident that happened that week on Caldey.

One dark evening my carer found me outside our accommodation with Father Thadd leaning over me. I had suffered a fractured skull and was taken to hospital. I still carry that scar.

I do remember waking up in hospital with my parents by my side.

I did not return to Caldey.

What happened is always been on my mind.

Firstly,

We were not allowed out at nights in the accommodation on Caldey. Father Thadd was also not allowed out at nights as their bedtime was 8pm.

Secondly,

I was told by my parents that I was running away and hit my head.

Who and why was I running away from when I should be asleep in my bed?

Thirdly,

I have written and searched for my history of this and there is no record of it anywhere. It has been well hidden. My parents never talked about it and would not let me discuss it.

I still think that Father Tadd was involved and that he caused me my injury.

Social Services and Court of Protection.

When I was three years old, we sibling were abandoned at home by my mother as my father was in prison. We survived two days before our neighbour heard our cries and came to rescue us. But I do remember eating Bonio dog biscuits from the cupboard and back then it was food.

Because of this we were put into a Council children’s home for a short period.

I know now that we were under the Court  of Protection, and Social Services till I was 12 years old.

We were put back with our mam and dad when he came out of prison.

I never knew this until 2021 when I got my records.

The Court of Protection and Social Services totally failed me

Allowing me and my sister a life no better than hell itself.

Home life 1969-1973

Since the first visit to Caldey Island and meeting Father C and then Father Thadd, I was no longer a happy, smiling, blond-haired boy.

I become a recluse in my world, a loner both at home and school.

Because of this I was bullied at school and had no friends, but I did have Tom the Action man.

I told Tom about my abuse and buried him so he keeps my secret, and my problems would go away. My problems never went away, but Tom kept my secret and I still know where he is buried today.

Father Thadd wrote to me a few times telling me about our special place, I kept one of them all my life close to me for  I knew one day I will tell the world about it.

After my last visit to Caldey I made a choice to get away from the abuse from Father C and his Friends, and Father Thad. I ran away to Swansea, and I knew my eldest brother had left home at 15 to get away from our dad.

I begged him if I could stay there, I never told him why and he probably thought it was because of dad.

I stayed a while but his partner at that time made me feel bit uneasy, so  I spent most time outside apart from school.

For some reason that I never found out was my parents decided to move to a part of Swansea called Port Tennant.

My father came to fetch me home.

Swansea

Back living with my parents and my younger siblings, it was not too bad until I heard that Father C was coming down to visit us.

I thought no way I was going to be his special boy anymore.

So, I decided when he would turn up, I would disappear and not come back until he gone. I knew my father would beat me bad but rather that than Father C abusing me.

It was a no-win situation, but the slipper was the only option.

My youngest sister was my spy bringing me bits of food and letting me know when Father C went home.

Every time Father C came down, I disappeared to the point my father gave up beating me as it started to make no difference to me.

My father developed cancer and within a year  he died from it.

I did not cry for him and when he was buried a small bit of peace came over me.

I did not know at this time that my mum was a secret drinker, hooked on communion wine.

She started to get violent, and the drinking increased, it got so bad spending money on wine that the food cupboards were becoming empty. The only meals we had were school dinners and I made best mates with the dinner lady as she always gave me extra on my plate.

She asked me one day why I was always hungry, and I told her my mam does not feed us as she is an alcoholic.

I did not know at that time the dinner lady went and told the headmaster who contacted Social Services and they went to see my mam and laid down the law.

When I got home after school, I opened the front door, and everything went dark.

I was found by my sister on Kilvey hill in Swansea near to death.

My mum paid a bad gang of lads to attack me and ram tablets down my throat and leave me to die on Kilvey hill.

I spent time in hospital recovering and the police came and told me they know who done it and my mam paid them by giving them her Benefit book.

The police wanted me to make a statement about it all so they could arrest my mum. I refused because in my heart I could not do that to her for many reasons including I don’t know what drove her to drink, but I suspected it was my dad and the priests.

I decided never to go back home.

I started to live on the street called Wine Steet in Swansea which was quite a rough area.

I became good friends with what I called ladies of the night.

I knew what they were doing there but it never bothered me.

There were drunks and druggies there, but I was under the protection of the ladies of the night. No man would dare come near me.

I still went to Cefn Hengoed school and there was my daily food intake.

During weekends and holidays, I would have some food from the ladies and a lot of the times I’d go up to the Smith crisps factory as they gave me out of date crisps etc to take back with me.

There was always kindness if  you looked for it. Free laundrette and

keeping myself clean.

My youngest sister came to be with me for a while and my youngest brother went to live with my eldest sister.

My sister stayed  with me a couple of weeks then she was picked up as a vulnerable person and taken to a children’s home.

Young boys were not seen as vulnerable persons in those days.

When I was old enough, I decided to go back to the countryside as the other option was going to be a life of pinching and robbing food and possible prison.

I regret never saying goodbye to the ladies of the night, but I know in  my heart that if I did, I would not leave.

I will be grateful to them forever and I will never forget them.

Back to countryside.

When I arrived back to be near Tregroes  living in a small caravan but was very happy as it was my home, my sanctuary.

I got a job straight away as a labour in the building trade.

I felt sad sometimes as I afraid of getting too close to girls so would back shy away.

1983

On November 4th, 1983, I met Carol who I fell in love with and got married in 1991.

Carol always knew that I had a bad upbringing as I’d just say my dad was nasty.

Carol also knew that I had tried to kill myself due to many bad dreams and the pressure of life at that time.

We have been together for almost 40 years and Carol has always been there through my hard times.

My coming out about my abuse.

I had been waiting for decades for someone to come forward about the abuse on Caldey Island.

When they did, they got ignored by the police, so I had enough of living these lies to hide the truth of this horrible abuse of children on Caldey Island.

I sat Carol down and told her and she said she knew my problems were not just my dad.

I then went to my GP and got the help I needed so badly for so many decades. Just before Christmas 2018 I told my family.

They knew there were things not right at home during my childhood.

Dyfed Powys Police.

I then approached my local MP to make contact with the police who stated that they were not going to open a investigation on my historic abuse on Caldey Island.

So, I decided to investigate the abuse of just not me, but what I had witnessed on Caldey Island.

I went back to the police with my MP with 80 pages of evidence and

made them do an investigation into my abuse etc.

2019

I made a film which I went back to Caldey for the first time in nearly 50 years, I ran into the ruins of the Abbey and there it was, the Altar stone still there after 50 years. I was shocked and horrified.

I told the BBC filming crew that I entered the ruins this day as a young boy but left as a man.

In 2019 I made a 6-hour police video evidence of my abuse by Monks on Caldey Island and Father C and his friends gang raping me for years.

But during this time the police were planning to try to discredit me by getting a proven corrupt police officer and his family to make false allegations.

They treated Carol and me horribly/ disgustedly, harassment and intimidation.

But thank God 3 top British lawyers came on board to help us and it was to be free as they knew what I was doing about Caldey etc was  right and the police soon left me alone.

Even though I told them that Father Thad  hade raped my sister, they ignored it.

I know now the police have totally ignored victims and witnesses.

I explained that a man I known all my life, in same Parish as me, went to Caldey Island as a child on retreat same period as me.

He was woken one night by Father Thadd trying to pull him out of bed, but he made so much noise that Father Thadd took the boy in the next bed because he was timid.

After this man saw my programme, he went and gave a statement to

the police and has never heard back from them and as far as he knows the police have never searched for that other boy/victim.

So, it also proves that Father Thadd was actively abusing children at night.

I have now over 30 victims due mostly to our campaign, all of them

Have been rejected by the police.

How many victims have died from drugs etc and suicide because of the lack of safeguarding when they needed to be protected.

The police have a safeguarding monk on Caldey who is a retired police officer . Well, that’s not independent safeguarding. The police are failing in their duty to safeguard children staying and visiting Caldey Island. I asked the new Chief Constable to come on board with us. Also I asked him what does he see when he closes his eyes at night, because what I see is the children’s eyes as they been dragged away to be raped/abused. He never replied to me.

Welsh Assembly

After collecting over five thousand signatures for a Public Inquiry into historic abuse on Caldey Island after 3 times it was put to their committee, even though a public inquiry was done on the Catholic Church they would not include Caldey Island.

I have since discovered that 2 MPs lived at some point on Caldey and also a serving police officer also lived on Caldey in late fifties.

There is no way that he not heard about the abuse, coppers nose ?

Campaign

We started this campaign back in 2019  mostly due to the failures of the authorities to act on Caldey.

Since the beginning many more survivors have come on board and their stories of horrific abuse and the failing of the police.

The campaign, even though delayed by Covid, is gathering speed, millions of people are aware of the failures and everyone I chat to will never go back or go to Caldey.

2022

Saturday the 10 of September 2022 I decided to go back to Caldey on my own to film in secret the new evidence that has come to light.

I was in disguise and thankfully no one recognized me, the Island was bare of tourists which proves what I was told in the summer that our campaign is having an effect on tourists visiting Caldey.

I will never give up; we are the voices of the victims including my sister.

GUEST BLOG   CALDEY ISLAND – CISTERCIAN MONKS

I was talking to fellow survivor Kevin O’Connell yesterday about Caldey Island  and abuse by the Cistercian monks which he outlines in his guest blog, SEE BELOW.

Poor and deprived Catholic children – many from the Birmingham diocese – were sent on holiday to Caldey Island where the monks were waiting for them… It’s a familiar story.

Kevin is a vigorous campaigner, with plans to go to Rome in pursuit of his cause. His story has been covered on BBC Wales https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-59479131, but needs wider coverage.

Apart from Caldey Island, Kevin has also related the Catholic trafficking of  children in Southern England.

His story is relevant to this site because, alongside the story of systemic De La Salle abuse at St Joseph’s College, Ipswich, and that of Stephen Smith  (‘The Boy in the Cellar’ book where Stephen recounts St William’s organized De La Salle abuse), it means there are now THREE proven examples of organized, systemic Catholic abuse in the UK.

Organised abuse – Catholic paedophile rings –  in the laity, the Knights of St Columba, and amongst cleric and religious orders like the De La Salles and the Cistercians – has yet to be acknowledged by the Church.

Officially it never happened and all concerned have shown no interest in following up proven cases.

So it’s fallen to survivors to present the evidence that organized abuse was endemic in Catholic society and may still be. These crimes don’t go away in one or two generations – much as they’d like us to believe it.

Three examples should be more than enough. Possibly we will have to wait until there are six or more examples before the Church will admit it contained and maybe still contains organized paedophile rings.

It may take a public enquiry, as Kevin suggests, or some other independent means to expose the truth.  Certainly it won’t come from Catholic organizations themselves.

The slowness and indifference of the De La Salles and the Knights of St Columba in dealing with these crimes is certainly noted.

They clearly don’t care if children may still be at risk.

Let’s hope the Cistercians are different.

Hi.

Thanks for your interest in our campaign Caldey Island survivors.

I suffered 50 years because of the horrible abuse from monks and priests.

I came out about it in late 2018 and since then with the help of Dinah Mulholland and others have campaigned for a public inquiry and to bring the Monks on Caldey into the UK laws and provide a independent safeguarding for children from Catholic Churches and schools still retreat on Caldey Island.

The abbot stated that they retain the right to oversee past present and future child abuse.

The whole story of Caldey and priests from Sussex/Surrey has not been told, this is why we need a public enquiry.

The police failure is unforgivable.

What I witnessed while on retreats on Caldey is industrial abuse of hundreds and possibly thousands of children, the poor, the weak and vulnerable children. Taken to the caves ,ruins, sand dunes and the monks cells in the ruins. Abusers would travel by boat daily as Caldey was well known for paedophiles

As a safe haven for them. Also the abbey hid paedophiles from the police.

But please have a look at our Facebook page Caldey  Island survivors campaign.

Web site caldeyislandsurvivors.org.

It would be lovely if you could help us .

I often ask people what do they see when they  close their eyes  at night, because what I see is the eyes of the children being dragged away to be abused.
